The captain's house
Captain Howes' summer house.
In the 1850s, number 134 on the Old King's Highway was the summer home of Captain Frederick Howes (1812 to 1882), master of the ship Climax. He invented the Howes Rig, a double topsail that split the big sail in two. It was more efficient and easier to handle, so ships could sail with fewer crew.
The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth remembers him as "the commodore of the captains, the oldest, wisest and most impressive." His house is one of the stops on their Captains' Mile walking tour. Today it smells of fajitas.

Look for the oval sign with the flaming jalapeño by the sidewalk, at the corner of Gingerbread Lane.
